I still cannot understand why this type of lottery is legal. It's simply a wealth transfer from those who don't understand statistics to those running the lottery... and the government sanctions it and takes a slice of the plunder.

Some say, "but it helps education" (at least here in the US). Why not just raise everyone's taxes, instead of effectively taxing those who need more education (in this specific area)?

Josh and Chintan,

A book I mentioned previously, The Poker Face of Wall Street has an interesting take on gambling and lotteries. In it, Brown argues (among many other themes and interesting stories) that gambling helps concentrate capital within a group of people that individually may not have enough capital to do any big beneficial projects on their own. It serves the same purpose as corporations issuing shares, in a more primitive fashion. His argument is elaborated further, and he suggests other reasons it's effective so there's more than just this.

But in general, of course I agree that it's foolish for any individual.

Regards,
Max

In Lottery odds range in 0.0001 to 0.0000001. So Lottery is basically crap.

Bingo is better than Lottery!
